>> me and my husband just walked a couple blocks from our house. we live for this stuff. >> reporter: today as the storm passed, new englanders got their first look at what it left behind. >> a lot of drifts. a lot of snow. >> reporter: in many areas, record accumulations. but now the seemingly endless snowfall and rushing winds of a violent blizzard have been replaced by the roar of plows and the constant hum of a comeback. >> as the wind subsides and as roads get cleared, restoration work will begin in earnest. >> reporter: for many, the first step in that recovery comes in snowshoes or on cross-country skis. others bundled up for a walk in the park. anything that gives them a sense their community is, in fact, theirs again. >> fun, actually. it's quiet. it's nice. >> reporter: nice that the snow

has stopped this massive satellite photo shows the storm moving off the coast. but there's work left behind. >> it's been a struggle. >> reporter: a struggle to restore power to hundreds of thousands, many without heat. a struggle to free dozens of cars abandoned at the height of the storm. >> the car is struck. >> reporter: a struggle to clear away and find someplace to put all of this snow. >> this will go on for a number of days. this will not all be done today. >> reporter: but at least there is now evidence that the difficult clean-up and recovery has started. now, look, digging out will be very difficult. the roads are open again, but still messy. public transportation here likely won't be back on line until sometime monday. live in boston, i'm jay gray, back to you. >> jay, let me ask you a question. you're talking about the roads slowly opening up.

what's going on with the airports back there? >> logan is going to try and open tonight, maybe a few limited flights in and out. they plowed one runway there. they've been working throughout the storm to have it ready for when things develop. it will be open tomorrow. in new york, both airports, laguardia and jfk are open tonight. they will be at almost full service tomorrow. as you can imagine there are a lot of people in this region who weren't supposed to be here during the storm, who hoped to get out before or during. so the fight for flights is going to be very intense. it's going to take some people days to finally get to their final destination. >> all right. thank you, jay. very cold out there as well. as for the bay area, all the airports here are back to normal after dealing with dozens of canceled flights yesterday because of the storm. there were no cancellations at the major or delays at sfo, oakland or san jose international airports today. that said there are thousands of people as jay mentioned whose flights were canceled yesterday in the bay area as well who are

still in the process of getting on flights this weekend. >> let's turn to meteorologist rob mayeda who has been watching the storm explode. >> you had this collision of air masses, continental polar air sweeping in from the great lakes, a warm tropical air mass coming up out of the south. as those two came together, you had that deep area of low pressure because it tracked off shore this was big-time snow event. many areas picking up two, three feet of snow. as you saw in boston, hartford and connecticut. boston, 18 degrees. winds out of the north at 20. the windchill factor feels more like zero. and tomorrow's highs will only be in the 30s. the storm is moving on, but all that snow that has fallen is not going anywhere. temperatures not warming up enough to melt some of that snow. out in the west a beautiful start to the weekend, but

hour-by-hour, tonight temperatures will be quickly dropping into the 30s as we pass my night. we'll talk about chilly temperatures coming up in a few minutes. the manhunt is on this weekend for that former los angeles police officer accused of killing three people. police say christopher dorner is a serious threat to the public and law enforcement and they are using all available manpower to find him. kimberly tere is in the newsroom. more than 1,000 officers are involved in the search. what's up, kim? >> that's right. everyone who is available is on the hunt to find christopher dorner. it was four years ago today that he was fired from the los angeles police department. investigators say they believe that dismissal is what led to the murderous rampage. so far three people have been killed. two others injured. investigators released a new image of dorner taken january 28th by a security camera at a hotel in orange county. the search for him continues today in the snowy mountains in

big bear lake where investigators found his burned-out truck. >> my understanding is that the car got stuck in the mud up there. so there was some thought that there was a die versiversion to attention, but there was some speculation that he got stuck there. >> turn yourself in. turn yourself in because we will find you. you have disgraced the public safety, the police profession, turn yourself in. >> profilers don't believe dorner will give up. he is suspected in the shooting death of a police officer a university security officer and his fiance, the daughter of a retired l.a. police captain. that captain is named in dorner's online manifesto declaring war on the people he believed to be responsible for his dismissal from the los angeles police department back in 2008. kimberly tere, nbc bay area

news. >> thank you very much. texas governor rick perry is stepping up his campaign to steal businesses away from california. perry will visit silicon valley, san francisco and los angeles during a four-day trip that starts tomorrow. he plans to tell people texas is better for business because there's no state income tax and more lenient labor and environmental laws. earlier this week, a radio ad campaign aimed at businesses. a woman on her bike was killed today across the street from at&t park when she collided with a cement truck. police are still investigating just how it happened. witnesses say the woman and the truck were both headed in the same direction on king street around 9:30 this morning when they somehow collided at the corner of 3rd street. a police officer who witnessed the accident immediately began cpr on the victim. >> the driver realized something happened. he is cooperating with police. it is not known if alcohol or drugs is playing a factor at this point, but it is under investigation and he is cooperating with police. >> the medics say they had the

woman at the hospital within 15 minutes but she died shortly after the accident. police say she's a san francisco resident in her mid 40s. a pittsburg man is behind bars tonight after allegedly holding a fast food worker hostage at knifepoint. pleasant hill police got a 911 cal from a jack in the box. the man came in brandishing a knife and tried to rob the business. police surrounded the business and evacuated as many people as they could. guerrero took one person hostage in an office. >> we set up our perimeter, did our tactical process. less than an hour later on his own the suspect came outside of the restaurant and was take noon custody. >> the pittsburg man is now facing charges of robbery, false imprisonment and kidnapping for ransom. coming up next at 5:00, baseball is back. we'll take you out to the giant

mosh than 40,000 people turned out at at&t park for fan fest. >> it's a chance to get up close and somewhat personal with players, coaches, pick up some autographs, maybe buy some tickets to the upcoming season. hard to believe, henry, spring training really begins next week? >> yeah, it's that son. just around the corner. the world series champs are looking forward to stepping up to the plate next week, first they have to step up to their fans. the giants had their annual fan fest today. kim coyle has more on the orange and black faithful who had the opportunity to meet their favorite players. >> reporter: the old saying that winning never gets old was on display this afternoon for the second time in three years. fans turned out in record numbers for the giants annual fan fest. >> we got here at about 10:00 last night. >> i stayed up all night.

got here 4:00 in the morning. >> reporter: shortly after 10:00 a.m. the wait was over. thousands of autograph seekers packed into at&t park and on nearly everyone's wish list was the reigning mvp. >> i saw game one of the world series. can i have your autograph? your friend, miles. >> people slept here last night, 8:00 last night just to get 15 seconds with you. >> that's awesome. you know, i wouldn't expect anything less of them. that's what they gave us all year last year. we expect the same this year. that's why they are the best fans in baseball. >> reporter: did you plan this whole outfit over knowing you would get in the clubhouse? this is how we dress every day. >> i want to play with each and every one of you! let's go! let's go! let's go! >> reporter: all will be quiet

now is your chance to be a part of the 49ers new stadium in santa clara, it's cheeper than buying tickets, but it's not cheap. the 49ers will start selling commemorative bricks that will be installed throughout the stadium set to open in 2014. fans can inscribe their name and a special message. the price tag? $157 to $375 depending on the size and length of the message. >> it's a nice brick. >> the bricks will go on sale march 1st. the money will go towards the construction of the stadium. the mars rover has dug a hole on mars, two and a half inches deep.

it will go on to the on board laboratory for analysis. the rock may hold evidence of a long-lost wet environment on the planet. it could take days or weeks to get results back from curiosity's lab. let's check in with rob. it's weird looking at those pictures of what's going on in the east coast. we have a glorious day. >> it's a nice reversal of fortune. it's a lot of sunshine after two days of spotty showers, low snow levels. after that our weather is looking really quite dry. outside now 55 degrees in san jose. 60 in morgan hill. 52 in san francisco. so we've had a lot of sunshine today. not a warm afternoon, though, with that chilly, dry air dropping in out of the north. wins have been out of the north in the hilltops which has helped to dry out the air more and set the stage for a chilly night tonight. wind-protected valleys in the 30s tonight. tomorrow, temperatures will come up a couple more degrees. the seven-day forecast, during what is typically the wettest

and snowiest time of year for northern california looks quite dry. the radar looking quiet now. it will stay that way for a while. high pressure, which is building in across the west coast. it will strengthen here over the next few days. it will take that storm track and send it way off to the north. talking up towards british columbia, and underneath that ridge of high pressure, we will see sinking dry air aloft. as this sets up across northern california and the bay area, you'll see slightly warmer days and really no sign of rain or snow. that will stay off to the north. these dry -- this dry pattern that is in place now, doesn't look like it's going anywhere through the end of the week. no clouds out there, so our temperatures will drop off. again, it's like sleeping without a blanket. as the heat radiates back out into space no high clouds and low clouds.

look out for patchy frost tomorrow morning, but the temperatures will warm about 30 degrees fr s fros from where we day. sunol and morgan hill should see highs in the 60s. san francisco, upper 50s for now, middle of the week should be around 60. it will be warming up in the forecast. temperatures not changing a whole lot the next couple of days. watch what happens. wednesday, thursday, friday temperatures starting to warm up. we could see temperatures close to 70 in a few spots. thursday and friday. so, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. the weather is gorgeous, but this is the snow-producing time of year for us, and we could use more snow in the sierras. starting to fall behind as long as the seven-day forecasts are staying dry. let's bring back henry wofford with a looks at what's going on in the world of sports. there's a lot.

welcome back to nbc bay area. after winning the world series in two of the last three seasons, the giants fans are the happiest fans in baseball. today they showed their loyalty by attending the annual fan

fest. it was packed out there. an estimated 40,000 fans were at at&t park. they were looking forward to getting autographs from the defending world series champions. 30 players attended the event including buster posey, pablo sandoval and tim lincecum. >> going to sprint up the stairs, try to get as many autographs as i can. brought the bat out. you know, as many signatures as i can get. put this in the trophy case. >> 2011 when i came, i didn't get here until 1:00. i didn't get any autographs except for i happened to run into bill newcomb on the field. i asked what he was doing. he said moving the world series trophy. he said no i said cue sign my hat? he said okay. >> it's exciting to be here. the energy, feels like spring

a pet insurance company gives out an award every year for the most unusual claim. this year's top prize goes to 56-month-old kitten in the oakland area. the siberian forest cat, natasha, went through an entire cycle in the washer. it lasted 35 minutes. >> my roommate was doing laundry, and he came in here, dropped off some clothes. and he left the lid open. and she must have wandered in and jumped in. and he came back, dropped off more clothes and didn't notice she jumped in there. >> insurance company uses the
